The terrazzo floor design in the CHSLD was inspired by the renowned work of André Le Nôtre, the landscape architect behind the Gardens of Versailles, and the broader study of classical European gardens. By studying these intricate garden designs, I sought to bring a touch of their garden spirit into the indoor environment of the CHSLD, a home for elderly residents. The central blue circle symbolizes a water fountain, a nod to the classical elements of these gardens. Additionally, the limestone bench adorned with cast bronze grapevine leaves on either side of the terrazzo floor invites residents to sit and contemplate, as they would in a natural environment. This public artwork, titled Jardins/Garden, aims to create a serene and visually stimulating space, enhancing the residents’ connection to nature and providing a sense of tranquility and beauty within their living environment.
